Life after motherhood is a phrase that keeps popping into my head lately. Tomorrow, my youngest daughter turns 18—and she’s just passed her driving test. Suddenly, my time as the “Mum Taxi” is over.
After almost two decades of structuring my life around my girls, I’m finding myself at a turning point. This next chapter feels unfamiliar but full of promise. If you’re in the same place—wondering who you are now that your children are more independent—you’re definitely not alone.

Whether it’s to change careers or simply to learn for the joy of it, many women are heading back to study. For example, platforms like OpenLearn or FutureLearn make online learning easy and accessible.
2. Starting Their Own Business
Some are turning hobbies into profitable ventures. Others are launching completely new brands. Either way, organisations such as Small Business Britain show how women over 40 are leading the way in entrepreneurship.
3. Taking Back Their Health
With fewer family commitments, it becomes easier to focus on physical and mental wellbeing. You might find yourself exploring strength training, walking challenges, or seeking support from resources like Henpicked Menopause Hub.
4. Rediscovering Creativity
Art classes, floristry workshops, writing groups—there are so many ways to reconnect with your creative self. In many cases, these creative outlets become businesses or long-term passions.
5. Becoming Mentors—or Finding One
Not only are women offering their experience to others, but many are also seeking mentors themselves. It’s a great way to gain clarity, build confidence, and feel supported during big transitions.
