Baby memorial casting is one of the most delicate and meaningful forms of lifecasting. Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with funeral directors, bereavement charities, hospitals, hospices, and families experiencing baby loss. Through my studio, Precious Memories, I’ve seen first-hand how powerful these keepsakes can be. Therefore, it’s essential that they’re created with professional skill, care, and compassion.

Creating memorial casts for babies is incredibly sensitive work. Often, there is only one opportunity to capture a perfect impression. Families place enormous trust in the person taking that cast. Understandably, these keepsakes become treasured memories.

Over the years, many families have come to me with casts made by well-meaning individuals who didn’t have the right training. For example, one family brought me a pair of plaster casts created by someone inexperienced. They were precious but extremely fragile. I carefully preserved the originals exactly as they were. Then, I transformed them into a pair of bronze memorial casts designed to hold ashes, creating a warm and lasting tribute to their baby. Moments like this clearly show why professional training matters so much — families deserve memorials created with professional skill, sensitivity, and respect.

A Story That Shows Why This Work Matters

One of the most meaningful training sessions I’ve delivered was with Daisy, founder of the charity Single Yellow Rose #TeamBelle. Although Daisy was already creating keepsakes for families through her charity, she wanted professional training to ensure the highest quality for the families she supports.

The Single Yellow Rose #TeamBelle charity was created in memory of Daisy’s daughter Belle, stillborn at 35 weeks in 2017. The charity supports bereaved families by improving hospital bereavement rooms, providing outfits for babies, offering hand and footprint keepsakes, and helping create comforting spaces for remembrance. In this way, their mission is to break the silence around baby loss.

3D Casting Training with Student from India

Over two days, Trisha focused on mastering the art of 3D baby casting, covering the first two levels of training. Babies of all ages visited the studio, giving her hands-on practice with real clients—essential for learning lifecasting techniques. This experience helped build confidence while teaching the foundational skills needed to create beautiful baby hand and foot castings.

Practical training is at the heart of this 3D casting course, ensuring students gain the knowledge to start their own keepsake business. By the end of the workshop, Trisha had the skills to produce high-quality, professional keepsakes that families will treasure forever.

2D Impression One Day Course

On the third day, Trisha delved into the art of 2D impressions, using clay to create raised plaster tiles. By pressing a baby’s hand or foot into soft clay, she captured intricate details, turning them into a lasting keepsake. While this technique may seem simple at first glance, mastering it requires precision to ensure every finger and toe is perfectly formed.

As the day progressed, it became clear how these mini memories are a fantastic addition for anyone looking to expand their keepsake business. Offering personalised baby handprints and footprints can provide clients with a truly unique and meaningful keepsake, enhancing the variety of services you can offer.

Family Handcasting Course

For the final part of training, Trisha learned advanced 3D family handcastings, including techniques for creating linked arms and family tree castings. Family handcastings can be free-standing or wall-hung, while family tree castings are framed, offering versatile display options. Despite jet lag, cold, and language barriers, Trisha made the most of every minute of her training.

Since returning to India, Trisha has launched her own keepsake business, specialising in family handcastings and family tree castings. She even shared her positive experience in a glowing review on my Facebook page.
