Flexible Work for Mums in 2026: Why It Still Feels Hard

If you’ve been searching for flexible work for mums in the UK—or anywhere in the world—you’re usually not looking for a hobby or something to pass the time.

You’re looking for something that actually fits around real life.

Something that works around children, school runs, family responsibilities, and still gives you financial independence and something that feels like yours again.

I understand that completely, because I built my entire business around that same need when my own children were small.

Let’s be honest — even in 2026, returning to work after having children is still not straightforward for many women.

The pressure doesn’t disappear as children grow either. It simply changes shape. Childcare costs may ease, but they’re replaced with school expenses, university fees, driving lessons, helping with deposits, and the ongoing cost of living that continues to rise.

At the same time, “flexible work” still doesn’t always mean what it says.

Hybrid roles are more common now, but fixed office days and expectations around availability still exist in many jobs. Once school runs, family commitments, or caring responsibilities are added in, flexibility often stops feeling very flexible at all.

So even now, in 2026, many mums are still trying to juggle everything — without ever feeling like things properly balance.

The truth is, most women I speak to feel stuck between needing income and needing something that actually works around their life.

And that’s where everything starts to shift.

What I’ve seen after 20+ years working with women

I didn’t start my business with a big plan or strategy.

It was back in 2004, my children were small, and I just needed something that worked around family life in a real, practical way.

So I started at my kitchen table making baby casts for local families.

Nothing polished. No perfect setup. Just one booking at a time while everyday life carried on around me.

Over time, it slowly grew into a business that has supported my family for more than 20 years.

And through that journey — and through training other women — I’ve noticed something very consistent.

It’s rarely about ability.

More often, it’s confidence.

Or time.

Or simply not knowing where to begin.

Many women arrive saying they’re “not creative”, and then surprise themselves once they start working with real families.

Because this work isn’t really about being artistic.

It’s about patience, care, attention to detail, and making people feel comfortable while you work.

And that is what people remember most.

Not just the finished piece — but the experience they had with you.

That’s what builds trust, reputation, and word of mouth over time.

It’s also why I’m still here after more than two decades, with most of my work coming through recommendations and returning families.

What actually changes for women (and why age doesn’t matter)

There really isn’t a single “right time” in life for something like this.

In 2026, I see women starting at completely different stages.

Some come with very young children and need immediate flexibility around early years and school life. Others come later in life, when their children have grown, or when they finally have space to focus on something for themselves again.

Both work equally well.

There’s no better starting point — just different stages of life.

There’s also no fixed path.

Some people move quickly and start taking bookings sooner than expected. Others take more time, build confidence gradually, and ease into it slowly.

Both approaches are completely valid.

What tends to change most isn’t just income.

It’s confidence.

That moment when something finally feels like it belongs to you again — something creative, something practical, and something that fits around your life instead of competing with it.

For many women, that is the real shift.

And yes — this is a real, client-led creative business.

Everything I teach is based on real work with real families, built over more than 20 years of experience. It’s designed to be flexible, practical, and sustainable around family life.
