Nicole’s Inspiring Journey: From Jersey to Dorset attending 3D & 2D Casting Training

Nicole came to me from Jersey nine years ago, to train in 3D baby casting, advanced family hand casts and 2D impressions. She wanted the skills and the confidence to create keepsakes properly, for her own clients.

Then she asked me something nobody had asked before:

“Do you think we could try horses?”

My friend Sandra runs Farmer Palmer’s, just down the road from me here in Dorset, so we went along and practised 2D impressions on a few of the horses. It was brilliant, honestly — and it’s exactly why I love it when a student brings something unexpected into the studio.

I still tell Nicole, being from Jersey, she really ought to add a cow to her portfolio one day. She hasn’t taken me up on it yet.

What Training Involves — and Where Nicole Is Now

3D and 2D casting is hands-on work. You learn to mix and handle the materials properly, capture every crease and dimple in a baby’s hand or foot, get the position and pressure right for a clean 2D impression — whether that’s a newborn’s foot, a dog’s paw, or a horse’s muzzle.

Nicole took that and built a proper business out of it in Jersey. She makes keepsakes for families and for pet owners, including pet bereavement pieces. One thing I was genuinely proud to see her do: a breast cancer awareness display for Marks & Spencer in Jersey, with ABC Jersey – Breast Cancer Support, telling survivors’ stories under the words Touch, Look, Check.

Still in Touch, Nine Years On

Nine years later, Nicole and I still talk, a lot. Recently she came to me upset about a difficult memorial client, and we talked it through properly. I also reminded her to look after herself — this work asks a lot of you emotionally, and it’s easy to forget that.

That’s what I want training to actually be. Not a few days, then goodbye. Years later, you can still pick up the phone.
