Beyond the “Side Hustle”: Why Specialist Training Can Give Women a New Route Back to Work
When I had my first daughter in 2004, I knew I wanted to be there for her as she grew up — school plays, sick days, storytime, all of it.
But I also wanted something that was genuinely mine.
I didn’t want a job that meant choosing between being present at home and having a career I actually cared about. So I started looking for something different — work I could build around her, rather than the other way around.
That’s when Precious Memories began.
A skill, not a shortcut
What started as a small idea grew into a specialist lifecasting practice that’s now been part of my life for more than 20 years.
I discovered I loved creating lasting pieces that captured genuinely important moments — a baby’s tiny hand, a couple holding hands, a family creating something together, a much-loved pet. These aren’t things you can mass-produce. Every piece is personal. Every casting is different.
That’s exactly why proper training matters, and why I’ve never believed a quick tutorial can replace it. Understanding materials is only part of the job. You also need to know how to steady a wriggling newborn without startling them, how to put a nervous parent at ease, and how to finish a piece so it’s something a family will still treasure decades from now.
For some women, a creative career can offer a completely different way of working — one built around a skill they can develop and make their own.
From learning a skill to becoming client-ready
I certainly didn’t have a long-term plan when I started. You learn. Mistakes happen. You practise. Confidence builds. And over time, you build real confidence — not the borrowed kind that comes from watching someone else do it, but the kind that comes from having actually done it yourself.
That’s exactly what I try to pass on to the people I train today. Most of my students arrive as complete beginners and leave client-ready. Some have gone on to take their first paying client within just two weeks of finishing their training.
Everyone develops at their own pace — but that’s the point of learning a specialist skill properly. You’re not just learning how to make something. You’re learning how to provide a service professionally.
Specialist skills can open more than one door
Lifecasting isn’t just one path.
Some students focus purely on baby and family hand casting. Others move into memorial lifecasting, creating deeply personal pieces for families who’ve lost someone they love. Some add belly bump casting alongside an existing business — a natural fit for doulas, midwives and photographers already working with expectant parents. Others explore pet casting, or silver jewellery.
The craft stays the same. What you build with it is entirely up to you.
A career doesn’t have to look traditional
This resonates most, I find, with women who’ve stepped away from employment to raise children.
Returning to work can feel daunting. Circumstances change. Full-time hours might not fit anymore. A daily commute might not be practical. Or you might simply realise you don’t want to go back to the job you had before.
That’s not the end of the road — it might just be a different one.
For some people, building something of their own offers a different kind of flexibility than any employer can — deciding not just when you work, but what you’re actually building. That comes with real responsibility too. There are no guarantees, and nothing about a genuine specialist skill happens overnight. But it gives you something solid to build on.

I tell people this often: you don’t need to know exactly where it’s going to take you. You just need to be interested enough to learn, and then see where it leads.
From there, you build — the craft, the confidence, the pricing, the clients, the reputation. Some people start small and grow slowly. Others find their footing faster than they expected.

What began with wanting a career that fitted around being a mum has grown into a practice that’s let me meet thousands of families, preserve moments that mattered enormously to them, and train people from across the UK and internationally in the same craft.
Your career doesn’t need to fit a traditional mould. It can evolve as your life evolves. But if you want it to last, I still believe it’s worth learning something properly — the way I did, more than 20 years ago, one mistake and one lesson at a time.
