Is an Online Hand Casting Course Enough to Start Charging Clients?

The short answer: an online hand casting course is a good way to learn the basics, but it will not prepare you for a real baby, a nervous parent and a result that really matters. If you plan to take paying clients, practise with real models and have an expert beside you first.

An online hand casting course can be a great place to start. You can watch demonstrations at home and explore whether lifecasting could become a business. However, there’s a big difference between watching a beautiful cast and feeling ready to take a booking.

I’ve trained hand casters and memorial lifecasters for over 20 years, so of course I teach in person and I’m biased. That is why I’ve included questions you can ask any trainer, including me.

What an online hand casting course can’t show you

Videos show you the steps. The challenge is knowing what to do when things don’t go to plan.

Babies move, tire and fuss. Watching a video is different from practising with a real baby while someone supervises. Materials add another variable, because setting times can change with water temperature, the product and the manufacturer’s instructions. So you need to learn why a mixture behaves differently, not just how to mix it.

An online course also cannot give you a baby to practise on. In my studio, I arrange the models and I’m there throughout. You leave with real work for your portfolio: your own casts, plus photos and videos from the day.

I encourage students to make mistakes in the studio, because support is on hand. Jacqueline Coleman described it well:

“It sounds weird being told I want you to make mistakes … but I now understand.”

Safe practice and the moments that matter

Safe practice means following the manufacturer’s instructions, working carefully and knowing when to pause. Training cannot make any session risk-free, but supervised practice builds that judgement. It matters most with memorial work, where there may be only one chance to capture a moment. I once turned a family’s fragile plaster casts into bronze memorial casts.

The real cost of starting a hand casting business

One student was paying £20 for a bag of alginate that I can source from my supplier for just over £6 for a comparable bag. A framed pair of feet might sell for around £150, but that is not your profit. You need to take off your materials, the frame and your time first. So every student gets my supplier list with trade discount codes, and we go through the real numbers together.

When comparing any course, ask: will someone watch my technique and give feedback? Is there practice with real models? What support is there afterwards?

Some people plan to try online first “just to see if they can do it”. In my experience, struggling alone can knock your confidence, and small mistakes can become habits. If you’ve already done an online course, you don’t need to start again. We build on what you know.

Support continues after training too. Every student has lifetime WhatsApp support for when their first paid bookings raise questions.

“I’ve now been offering hand and foot castings in my local area, which have been going really well! I’m so glad I chose Glenda to train with!!”
